Mark Olsen, the Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ), emphasized the immediate priority of ensuring safety for both the local community and visitors.

“Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of the residents who have been evacuated from the northern beaches. We’re actively working to secure emergency accommodation for them and their pets,” he stated.

Highlighting the unprecedented situation caused by the Barron River’s record-breaking overflow, Olsen noted its impact on Cairns Airport, an occurrence never witnessed before.

“Ensuring safety remains our utmost concern. An evaluation of the airport’s condition is scheduled for midday. Until we receive the clearance, no flights will be received at the airport,” he clarified.

Currently, Tropical North Queensland hosts over 4500 visitors, including 400 emergency services personnel. Olsen highlighted a significant financial setback, with an estimated loss of $60 million due to cancellations and future booking cancellations since December 5.

“As we face the upcoming challenging week, our immediate focus is assessing the extent of damage and devising a recovery plan,” Olsen expressed, emphasizing the region’s resilience and determination to bounce back.

Acknowledging the need for industry support to rebuild and recover, Olsen stressed the importance of evaluating the impact on the tourism sector, a process expected to take several days.

“Our primary aim at this moment is to provide accommodation for the exceptional emergency services team and secure emergency housing for our displaced residents,” he concluded, underlining the current focus amidst this crisis.
