IndiGo halts Kanpur-Bengaluru flights due to engine issues; expands with new Ayodhya routes, reflecting aviation industry’s dynamic nature.

IndiGo Airlines, India’s leading carrier, has recently announced a temporary suspension of its flight service from Kanpur to Bengaluru. This suspension, effective from January 1, 2024, for a period of three months, has stirred concerns among Kanpur’s residents, especially within the business community.

Mayank Khanna, the Vice President of the Merchant Chamber of Commerce, sought clarifications directly from IndiGo’s headquarters. The airline disclosed that the suspension was due to engine-related technical issues affecting its fleet. Approximately 30 aircraft are already grounded owing to these problems, and an additional 30-40 planes are expected to be grounded following the directives from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in the first quarter of 2024.

This issue is not confined to the Kanpur-Bengaluru route. Over 30 flights across the country have been impacted. Despite the high demand from Kanpur, the grounding of a significant portion of its fleet has compelled IndiGo to suspend these flights. However, IndiGo remains optimistic. Subject to DGCA’s approval, the airline plans to restore all canceled or postponed flights from April onwards. In the interim, IndiGo is working on leasing additional aircraft and eagerly awaits the delivery of new planes to bolster its fleet.

In a contrasting development, IndiGo has also announced new routes, reinforcing its commitment to expanding connectivity. The airline is set to launch direct flights connecting Mumbai with Ayodhya from January 15, 2024, and operate daily services on this route. Further, new services from Delhi to Ayodhya starting December 30, 2023, and from Ahmedabad to Ayodhya beginning January 11, 2024, are in the pipeline. These announcements coincide with the inauguration of the Ayodhya airport by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 30. The newly constructed airport, an initiative by the Airports Authority of India, features a terminal building that embodies the rich cultural essence of Ayodhya.

The scenario depicts a mixed phase for IndiGo Airlines – grappling with technical setbacks on one hand while expanding its network on the other, indicating the dynamic nature of the aviation industry.
