Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) is set to transform its boarding process by adopting an innovative artificial intelligence-based passenger counting system, marking a significant leap into the digital future. Following successful trials, SWISS plans to implement the new AI procedure in the third quarter of 2024 for short-haul services and the fourth quarter for long-haul flights.
The airline’s decision to embrace this cutting-edge technology stems from three months of trials conducted earlier this year. Using in-depth AI models developed in-house, SWISS collaborated with Berlin-based start-up Vion AI GmbH to create a reliable system that accurately counts passengers during boarding, eliminating the need for manual counts.
The advantages of this AI-based solution are manifold. Oliver Buchhofer, SWISS’s Head of Operations, highlights the improved efficiency and speed of the boarding process, reducing waiting times and enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers. The new digital count also alleviates the workload on cabin crews, ensuring a smoother operation.
SWISS chose Vion AI GmbH as its IT partner through a competitive tender process. Michael Busch, CEO of Vion AI, expresses pride in contributing to the safety, security, and efficiency of European air travel. The collaboration aims to provide tailored solutions that prioritize precision and innovation.
Crucially, SWISS emphasizes its commitment to data security and protection. The recordings of passenger boardings will strictly adhere to European (GDPR) and Swiss (FADP) data protection provisions. All collected data will be used solely for passenger count purposes, ensuring anonymity and complying with the highest privacy standards.
SWISS’s adoption of AI-based passenger counts reflects its dedication to enhancing safety and efficiency in air travel. With the implementation scheduled for 2024, passengers can anticipate a seamless and secure boarding experience, supported by cutting-edge technology.
