A new airport in Ayodhya will open its door for flights on December 30, 2023. Since 2022, the airport—which has the IATA code AYJ—has been under development. The airport went on to witness an Indian Air Force aircraft landing while it was testing its different flight systems in December 2023.

Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram International Airport happens to be the official name of the airport in Ayodhya. Small aircraft could only be accommodated on the airport’s original airstrip. The airport is instrumental in accommodating a 737/A320 family aircraft, nevertheless, as a consequent result of land purchase. Furthermore, the Ayodhya Airport, which will welcome its first flight on December 30, was awarded an aerodrome license by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

For the first phase, Terminal 1 will open its doors. Almost 600,000 travellers a year will be accommodated by the airport, which will be able to accommodate 300 people during peak hours. Four Airbus A320-type aircraft can be parked on its apron.

After the AYJ airport opens, there will be one more airport nestled between Lucknow and Gorakhpur. It will be intriguing to see how traffic expands at these locations. Most residents of Kanpur and Gorakhpur used to go to Lucknow to catch their flights before this. Gorakhpur airport has expanded in the last ten years with flights from IndiGo, Alliance Air, and SpiceJet to various airports since the airbase there established a military enclave. Kanpur is now a part of IndiGo’s extended route network. The lone Q400 that operated the infrequent SpiceJet service from Kushinagar when it first began in 2021 was eventually withdrawn.

In the past, people travelled to Ayodhya by driving from Lucknow, where they took aeroplanes. The tourism industry in Ayodhya will flourish as a result of less friction, making it simpler for visitors to go there directly. Ayodhya is also the site of hotel renovations by all major hotel chains.

The inaugural aircraft is slated to land in Ayodhya on December 30, 2023. Following that, on January 06, 2024, commercial operations for a direct route between Delhi and Ayodhya would begin. By January 11, 2024, there will be tri-weekly flights between Ahmedabad and Ayodhya. Ayodhya will be the 86th domestic station for IndiGo.
