The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) has issued a strong advisory against travel to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs) in light of the recent escalation of violence in the region. The warning comes following an unprecedented attack by Palestinian militants, particularly Hamas, which launched thousands of rockets into Israel, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to declare the country “at war.”
The FCDO’s advisory specifically cautions against all travel to the Gaza Strip, the Sheba’a Farms, Ghajjar, and areas within 500 meters of the borders with Lebanon and Syria. Additionally, it advises against all but essential travel to certain areas in the northern West Bank.
The advisory emphasizes the Israeli government’s declaration of a state of emergency across the entire country and highlights the potential for international borders (air and land) in Israel and the OPTs to close suddenly. Travelers are strongly encouraged to check with their airlines and travel insurers for the latest information before embarking on their journeys.
Given the rapidly evolving and tense security situation in Israel and the OPTs, the FCDO stresses the importance of remaining vigilant at all times and staying updated through local media and travel reports.
Specific areas in the northern West Bank, including Jenin city, Burqin, Arranah, Jenin refugee camp, Nablus, Joseph’s Tomb, Balata and New Askar refugee camps near Nablus, and the village of Huwara, are also mentioned as areas where all but essential travel should be avoided.
The FCDO’s advisory underscores the seriousness of the situation in the region and the potential risks to travelers. It serves as a cautionary measure to ensure the safety and security of UK citizens amidst the ongoing conflict and instability in Israel and the OPTs. Travellers are urged to exercise caution and remain informed about local developments.
