Sharjah, Gaza War, New Year

The third largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates, Sharjah, has decided to ban fireworks for the New Year 2023.

This came as an expression of solidarity with the people of Gaza due to the ongoing war that has been going on between Israel and Hamas.

Surprisingly, Sharjah does not have close or official ties with Israel, yet it chose to ban fireworks to stand for humanity.

The Sharjah police made this official announcement on Facebook and even said that they are bound to take serious measures if anyone is found to violate the ban.

The post came from Sharjah police’s official Facebook page, where they comprehended that the ban was simply an expression of solidarity. In addition, it is a humanitarian cooperation that they seek to foster with their brothers and sisters in the Gaza Strip.

Sharjah falls behind Abu Dhabi and Dubai in terms of its population and size. This ban came as a surprise for the people of Sharjah as the city is known to celebrate its New Year’s fireworks. Normally, it lasts several minutes hovering across the Al Majaz Waterfront. However, this year won’t be any.

In 2020, the UAE established diplomatic ties with Israel, laying avenues for other nations to do the same.

Despite its condemnation of Israel’s shelling and invasion of the enclave, the regional power of the Gulf has called for a humanitarian truce in the Gaza conflict on several occasions.

Additionally, it demanded the return of hostages that the Palestinian Islamist organisation took prisoner in Gaza on October 7 and denounced Hamas for the attack that sparked the conflict.

Given that public celebrations are still being aired in the other emirates of the country, Sharjah’s decision to only allow fireworks on New Year’s Eve seems to be exclusive to just one emirate.

The most spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks display in the United Arab Emirates takes place in Dubai, the most populated emirate and a major tourist destination in the area, which is home to iconic buildings like the Burj Khalifa and the man-made Palm Jumeirah island.

The Emirate of Sharjah, located in the United Arab Emirates, has Sharjah as its capital. Notable among its several museums are the Sharjah Archaeology Museum and the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization. Together with the Al Noor Masjid, a mosque modelled after Istanbul’s Blue Mosque during the Ottoman Empire, Sharjah is also home to the Sharjah Classic Cars Museum.
