As part of the state government’s ambitious initiative to establish floating bridges in coastal districts, the inaugural ceremony for the first floating bridge in Thiruvananthapuram district at Papanasam Beach is scheduled for December 25.
The Tourism Minister, Shri PA Mohamed Riyas, will officiate the opening of the floating bridge and kick off water sports activities on the beach at 10 am. The event will be presided over by Shri V Joy, MLA.
This marks the seventh floating bridge to be established in the state as part of the Department of Tourism’s program. The floating bridge at Varkala, developed in collaboration with the District Tourism Promotion Council, Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society, and the Municipality of Varkala, is expected to boost tourism in the region.
Key dignitaries attending the ceremony include Shri KM Laji, Municipal Chairman, Varkala; Smt Kumari Sudarshini, Vice Chairperson; Shri C Ajayakumar, Councillor and Chairman of Education Standing Committee; Shri V Nithin Nair, Chairman, Health Affairs Standing Committee; Shri Rajeev GL, Deputy Director, Tourism; Shri Binu Kuriakose, CEO, KATPS; and Shri Shyam Krishnan, Secretary, DTPC.
The floating bridge, boasting a length of 100 meters and a width of three meters with supporting pillars on both sides, features a platform at the end measuring 11 meters in length and seven meters in width. This platform allows visitors to savor panoramic views of the sea.
Constructed with 1,400 high-density floating polyethylene blocks, the floating bridge incorporates safety measures such as safety boats, life jackets, and lifeguards. The bridge accommodates up to 100 visitors simultaneously, with entry permitted from 11 am to 5 pm.
