With the launch of two new routes and one new airline, Guatemala’s air connectivity has expanded. Alaska Airlines, the biggest airline operating out of LAX in Latin America, recently announced that it will begin direct service from Los Angeles’s LAX airport to Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in December 2023.
When it comes to Latin America, Avianca Airlines happens to be one of the largest airlines. It stated that on December 13, 2023, air service would start between La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City and O’Hare International Airport, located in Chicago.
On November 3, 2023, Volaris, which is Mexican Airlines, made a statement to the media. On its route from San Salvador to Chicago ORD, it will now include Guatemala City as a layover destination.
There has been a positive impact on Guatemala from the increased regional flights. Two airlines that have just begun offering service to and from Guatemala are Aeromar and Arajet. With two weekly flights between Guatemala and Cancun, Mexico, Aeromar started operating less than a year ago. Flights to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, are currently operated by Arajet, which began operations in September 2022.
The number of international destinations served by La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala has seen the rise of new airlines. TagAirlines, the flag carrier of Guatemala, carried over 295,000 passengers in 2022, up 169 percent from the previous year. This number is anticipated to rise even more with the addition of new airlines.
