Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai, India, recently observed Fire Service Week to promote the safety and well-being of passengers and personnel at the airport. The week, which is observed all over India from April 14 to 20 each year, pays homage to brave firefighters who lost their lives while on duty during the dock explosion in Mumbai in 1944.

During the event, CSMIA’s Aerodrome Rescue & Fire Fighting Services (ARFF) showcased its advanced technology, including seven Crash Fire Tenders (CFT) that can fight fires while in motion, reaching speeds of up to 80 kmph in just 26 seconds. The airport’s Rescue Stair can reach a height of 8.3 meters, facilitating the quick evacuation of large aircraft such as the A380. Other equipment includes small fire tenders, rescue boats, and a Forward Command Post, all designed to handle different types of emergencies.

The ARFF team undergoes extensive training, spending more than 10,000 man-hours each year to ensure that all stakeholders at CSMIA receive proper fire safety and airport emergency management training. The team is equipped with state-of-the-art personal protective equipment, including breathing apparatuses that last 45 minutes in toxic environments, proximity suits, and gear weighing approximately 19 kg.

CSMIA’s dedication to emergency preparedness and response is a testament to its commitment to saving lives and preventing accidents. The airport’s ARFF Services department remains at the forefront of aviation safety in India, setting an example for other airports to follow.
