Kenya Airways (KQ), the national carrier of Kenya, has entered into a short-term lease agreement with Hi Fly, a leading lease and charter specialist airline, to optimize operational efficiency during the peak festive season.

Under the Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance (ACMI) lease, an A330 Airbus will be immediately incorporated into the KQ fleet to bolster operational efficiency and increase market capacity.

Allan Kilavuka, the Group Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Airways, emphasized the need for practical measures to address current market challenges. In response to the growing demand for air travel and existing capacity constraints, Kilavuka stated, “We must balance our customers’ immediate needs by introducing more capacity into the market.”

The introduction of the A330 Airbus aims to support the expected surge in travelers, following President William Ruto’s recent announcement of Kenya becoming a visa-free country starting January 2024.

Kilavuka highlighted the significance of this swift action to address capacity challenges, stating, “The arrival of the aircraft allows us to promptly address operational stability and efficiency, providing enhanced capacity for the convenience of our passengers.”

The wide-bodied aircraft, accommodating 299 passengers with 24 in the business cabin and 275 in economy class, will contribute to improved operational stability. Additionally, its wide-bodied design enhances cargo space, providing additional belly capacity.
