Checking in early at the airport three hours prior to the scheduled flight would not put passengers in a jiffy now. Their bags would roll into a storage facility that is comprised of a complex network of conveyor belts that are screened and sorted.
This is a completely automated process pertaining to the revamped early baggage facility at Terminal 2. This will help run the aviation hub smoothly.
A facility the size of four Olympic-sized swimming pools can be found in Changi Airport’s Terminal 2. This makes way for 4,200 bags to shuttle through a system of conveyor belts that stretches to above 1.2 km every day.
There is an automated crane that is instrumental in sorting the bags. This checks in early concerning the storage slots in accordance with height and weight.
Prior to the departure of the flight that is bound to load the bags, the crane will automatically retrieve them and send them on their way.
The airport operator, called Changi Airport Group, or CAG, told the media that there are travellers who will be checking in their bags early before three hours concerning the departure of the flight.
The ground handlers then pick up the bags and bring them to the plane. In addition, the automated crane system is functional in maximizing the storage flight’s capacity. As a result, instead of being kept in a designated area or lane based on schedule, the bags might be kept based on the compartment’s availability.
Passengers will be able to check in at the Jewel Lounge as early as 24 hours prior to the departure of the flight. Furthermore, standard airline counters open for check-in roughly two to three hours prior to departure.
Due to the use of automated cranes that are instrumental in placing incoming bags in storage slots, the process has become easier. This is even more efficient, as it cuts down on the chances of human error.
