Amtrak, in collaboration with its partners, has secured over $2.1 billion to enhance current routes and propel initiatives to extend its services nationwide in the United States.
Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner expressed enthusiasm about the grants, stating, “Amtrak ridership is surging, and we’re advancing plans to further improve and expand our services across the United States in collaboration with our diverse partners.” He highlighted the intention to leverage Amtrak’s network and expertise to support states and local communities in introducing intercity passenger rail to new areas.
The funding includes $108.5 million allocated directly to Amtrak for station and service enhancements, $2 billion to partners in North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maine for infrastructure upgrades benefiting Amtrak customers, and $34.5 million for the planning and development of 69 new and improved intercity passenger rail corridors in 39 states and localities, with Amtrak set to play a supporting role.
These grants were distributed through the Federal Railroad Administration’s Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program and the Corridor Identification and Development Program. FRA Administrator Amit Bose emphasized the transformative impact of President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda, fostering rail projects that offer sustainable alternatives to congested roads and airports.
Under the Federal-State Partnership Program, Amtrak received three grants, including funds for the Chicago Union Station Projects, aimed at revitalizing the station and enhancing Midwest passenger rail. Another grant will improve the Empire Builder service through the Malta, Mont. Corridor Operational Enhancement Project.
Moreover, Amtrak-led grants under the Corridor ID Program include initiatives such as the Texas High-Speed Rail Corridor, Long Island Northeast Regional Extension, Daily Cardinal Service, and Daily Sunset Limited Service. These projects aim to introduce high-speed rail service, extend existing routes, and increase service frequency, aligning with Amtrak’s mission to expand intercity passenger rail across identified corridors.
With over 52 years of experience connecting communities and dedicated teams nationwide, Amtrak is poised to play a pivotal role in the proposed expansion of intercity passenger rail, supporting the development and improvement of rail corridors across the country.
