Aer Lingus flights between Manchester and New York JFK commenced this week and in doing so became the airline’s first direct service between the UK and United States.
The carrier will additionally launch flights from Manchester to Orlando on 11 December ahead of ‘ambitious’ transatlantic schedule plans from Dublin and Manchester in 2022.
The services were previously due to commence on 30 September but were delayed because of continuing restrictions on travel into the United States.
Aer Lingus is operating the new service using Airbus A321LR single-aisle aircraft with 16 lie-flat business class seats and 168 seats in the economy cabin.
In 2022 it intends to operate more than 71 direct routes to 62 destinations as it rebuilds its network, including 16 transatlantic routes from Dublin and Manchester. It operated more than 100 routes in 2019.
Reid Moody, Aer Lingus chief strategy and planning officer said that the launch of Manchester-New York flights marks a very important day for Aer Lingus, as they launch their first flights from the UK to the United States as they recover and expand our transatlantic network.
Karen Smart, Manchester Airport managing director, added that it’s incredibly pleasing to see Aer Lingus launch its New York service, which will give passengers more choice when looking to travel to what is one of our most popular destinations.
Aer Lingus’ transatlantic routes will no doubt be hugely popular with the 22 million people that live in our catchment area, especially now the US has opened up to British travellers.
