The highly stressed diplomatic relation between Canada and India are an important cause of concern for the hospitality sector in Kerala, particularly before the tourism season. Kerala annually welcomes approximately 25,000 to 30,000 Canadian tourists.
The Indo-Canadian relationship, in the recent past has hit a new low with both the countries declaring travel advisories requesting people to be utmost cautious while travelling to few regions in the other country.
Canada is one of the top 10 countries for Kerala to contribute in growing its economy from international tourist arrivals, as per the data furnished by the Tourism department.
In 2023, The response from the tourists coming from other countries has been quite positive before the tourism season which normally kick-starts in October-November. In 2022, there was countless cancellations after the postponement in resolving the issue related to e-visa with the U.K.
When the tourism industry in 2023 in Kerala is getting all prepared for a vigorous season with a considerable rise in the UK tourist arrivals, the diplomatic tiff between the two countries has come as a major dampener. Mr. Scaria said that they hope this problem will be sorted out as early as possible as it has wider consequences.
