Every day from cruise ships, thousands of tourists spill onto a boardwalk in the capital city of Alaska. Vendors hunt the buses to take the visitors away, with several visitors headed directly to the Mendenhall Glacier, the area’s crown jewel.

The glacier has a rocky expanse of white, grey and blue, the huge glacier gets numerous visitors in sightseeing helicopters and lures them by canoe, kayak, and foot. Others come to see the glacier and other wonders of Juneau that the city’s instant stress is how to handle them all as a huge number of tourists are expected this year. This summer, some residents ran to the quieter places. A contract between the cruise industry and city will limit how many ships will turn up in 2024.

However rapid change in climate is softening the Mendenhall Glacier. It is decreasing in size so fast that by 2050, it might no longer be seen anymore from the visitor center.

That’s an important question that Juneau is worrying now, what will happen then?

They should be thinking about their glaciers. Also, the ability to view glaciers as they retreat, said Alexandra Pierce, the tourism manager of the city. Also, there needs to be an aim on decreasing environmental effects, she said.
