5.6 magnitude earthquake shakes Bangladesh

An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 struck the Bangladesh region on Saturday, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) said.

The quake was at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), GFZ.

The epicentre of the quake was located 48 kilometres southwest of Comilla.

Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal in India also felt similar tremors.

An earthquake rattled several areas in Bangladesh on Saturday morning, registering a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale.

The National Center for Seismology reported that the earthquake occurred at 9:05 AM local time in Bangladesh.

The quake originated at a depth of 55 kilometers below the Earth’s surface.

Additionally, various districts in North Bengal, including North 24 Parganas, Howrah, and Hooghly, experienced seismic activity on Saturday morning.

This seismic event adds to a recent series of earthquakes felt in Bangladesh, with earlier occurrences reported in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Rangpur, Chuadanga, and Noakhali.

Ladakh also recorded an earthquake at 8:25 AM with a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale, originating from a depth of 10 kilometres below the surface.

While the quake has stirred concern, authorities have clarified that there is no immediate threat of collapse.

The depth and intensity readings, closely monitored every 15 minutes, allow for timely evacuation if needed.

The earthquake has interrupted ongoing consolidation works, prompting the swift establishment of exclusion zones to ensure public safety.
