As Storm Babet rages on, it has brought unprecedented destruction to Scotland and Ireland. In a tragic incident in Angus, a 57-year-old woman lost her life when she was swept into the Water of Lee at Glen Esk. Her body was recovered after a three-hour search, as a rare red weather warning blanketed the area. Police Scotland confirmed no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident, highlighting the extreme weather’s dangers.

Deputy First Minister Shona Robison issued a stern warning to residents, urging them to stay at home and avoid unnecessary travel. Storm Babet is still in its early stages, with the worst impacts yet to come.

One of the most dramatic consequences of the storm has been the forced evacuation of the entire town of Brechin in Angus, due to severe flooding concerns. The region has experienced landslides and is expected to endure a potentially record-breaking amount of rainfall, causing widespread chaos and displacement.

In addition to the human toll, roughly 10,000 homes in Scotland have lost power due to the storm, leaving residents grappling with the impacts of the severe weather. Meanwhile, in Ireland, the situation is no less dire, with the army being deployed after Cork County Council reported over a month’s worth of rain falling in just 24 hours, resulting in unprecedented and widespread flooding.

The impacts of Storm Babet serve as a sobering reminder of the devastating force that extreme weather events can unleash and the importance of heeding weather warnings and staying safe during such dangerous conditions. Our thoughts go out to all those affected by this destructive storm.
