IndiGo, the preferred carrier of India, has etched its name in history by achieving the remarkable feat of transporting 100 million passengers in a single calendar year, a milestone that places it among the elite group of global airlines operating at such a massive scale. This accomplishment solidifies IndiGo’s position as one of the world’s top 10 airlines in terms of passenger traffic.
Celebrating its 17th anniversary this year, IndiGo has rapidly become one of the fastest airlines to reach the 100 million passenger mark. In the calendar year 2022, the airline welcomed 78 million passengers on board, surpassing pre-Covid19 levels. This milestone signifies a remarkable 22% increase in passenger traffic for the year 2023. IndiGo has also set another milestone by being the first Indian airline to operate more than 2,000 flights a day, serving 118 destinations, including 32 international ones.
Mr. Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, expressed his delight on this momentous occasion, attributing the achievement to the trust and support of customers, coupled with the dedication of IndiGo’s team. He emphasized that the milestone validates the airline’s diligently executed strategy of connecting people and aspirations, making air travel accessible to millions of Indians over the past 17 years.
In 2022, IndiGo adopted a growth strategy under three key pillars – ‘Reassure, Develop, and Create’ – to support its ambitious plans of doubling in size and scale by the end of the decade. The airline bolstered its fleet by placing a historic order for 500 new aircraft with Airbus, in addition to the earlier order for over 450 aircraft.
The achievement of transporting 100 million passengers in a single year reflects the positive trajectory for both IndiGo and Indian aviation. The government’s vision for India’s growth, with aviation as a catalyst, is proving beneficial for the nation, as well as the tourism and hospitality sector. IndiGo, with its expanding network, has added more than 20 new international routes in the last six months, reinforcing domestic connectivity. The airline’s future plans include adding destinations like Bali, Indonesia, and Medina, Saudi Arabia, in a financially and environmentally sustainable manner, thereby continuing to meet the mobility needs of customers and contributing to India’s progress.
