Denver International Airport

Denver International Airport (DEN) celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for the Center of Equity and Excellence in Aviation (CEEA). This unique training center, a first of its kind, is dedicated to fostering aviation talent for the entire Denver community, with a focus on underrepresented communities, historically underutilized businesses, people of color, and women. CEEA aims to create a pipeline of skilled professionals, promote generational wealth, establish career pathways in the aviation industry, and serve as an innovation hub with global influence.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston emphasized DEN’s pivotal role in driving the economic growth of the Rocky Mountain region, contributing over $36 billion to Colorado’s economy and supporting more than 220,000 jobs. He commended DEN CEO Phil Washington and his team for their efforts to create opportunities in aviation, especially for underrepresented members of the community, including minority-owned businesses.

CEEA is integral to developing a talented aviation workforce in Colorado, setting an inspiring example for airports worldwide. As Denver expands, the importance of addressing the needs of underrepresented and younger generations while prioritizing equity, diversity, and inclusion remains crucial.

Constructed as part of the Great Hall Program, CEEA will occupy approximately 38,000 square feet of space on Level 4 of the hotel and transit center (under the Westin Hotel). The Hall of Equity, a central feature, will accommodate around 300 people for dynamic training and education, with additional lecture halls and training rooms for 200-300 people. The space will also include a pre-function and lobby area with a small café for networking and small group meetings.

CEEA’s development aligns with DEN’s commitment to cultivating the aviation workforce, supporting small and minority businesses, and leading the industry in research and innovation. Phil Washington, DEN CEO, expressed the ambition for CEEA to be the industry model, providing opportunities for underrepresented individuals and businesses to enter and excel in the aviation sector.

As construction progresses, DEN has already initiated CEEA programming, offering diverse training and development opportunities. This includes the Business Development Training Academy, providing support for small businesses entering DEN, and Career Pathways, creating a talent pipeline through progressive training models. Additionally, the Research and Innovation Lab within CEEA will collaborate with local colleges and universities to advance aviation research, identify best practices, and innovate technology systems.

The design of CEEA is led by Studio Completiva, and construction is undertaken by Sky Blue Builders. This project offers both firms a chance to take on leadership roles and gain significant experience for their growth.

The overarching Great Hall Program aims to enhance security, improve operational efficiencies, and elevate the passenger experience in DEN’s terminal. It includes the construction of two state-of-the-art security checkpoints, new ticketing lobbies, and a meeter/greeter space on the south end of Level 5.
