Ras Al Khaimah, boasting the most advanced hiking trail network spanning 80km on Jebel Jais, is thrilled to announce the return of HIGHLANDER, the ultimate hiking challenge in the region, scheduled for February 2-4, 2024.
Having attracted a diverse international participant base in its last edition in November 2022, this adventure challenge invites hikers and adventure enthusiasts to test their physical prowess on the stunning trails of the Emirate, exploring the breathtaking rock formations, rugged canyons, and iconic wadis of the Hajar Mountains.
Continuing its tradition, HIGHLANDER Ras Al Khaimah 2024 will feature two distinctive formats. HIGHLANDER Pegasus, a 40km backpacking challenge held over three days (2-4 February), pays homage to the constellation in the northern sky and the winged horse of Greek mythology. Simultaneously, HIGHLANDER Orion, a 25km trek over two days (3-4 February), takes its name from the prominent celestial equator constellation, offering participants the chance to delve into the famous and rugged Hajar Mountain range with panoramic views of the valleys below.
Both HIGHLANDER formats will traverse ancient settlements and active farms, showcasing the rich history and diversity of Ras Al Khaimah while illustrating how communities have thrived in this rocky region for centuries.
Renowned as a haven for hikers, Ras Al Khaimah provides an ideal backdrop for this outdoor activity, catering to individuals of all ages and abilities. With over 80km of interconnected trails on Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest mountain, the terrain serves as the perfect training ground for explorers, enthusiasts, and novice hikers.
Prioritizing the safety of participants, organizers have confirmed multiple HIGHLANDER checkpoints along both routes, supported by marshals and medical aid stations. The decision to shift HIGHLANDER 2024 from November to February ensures participants witness the stunning natural beauty of Jebel Jais post-winter rains, adorned with wildflowers and grass blanketing the mountain range.
In alignment with Ras Al Khaimah’s vision to become a regional sustainable tourism leader by 2025, and in line with its ‘Balanced Tourism’ strategy, HIGHLANDER aims to raise awareness about preserving and protecting nature. Participants will engage in educational sessions on ecology and sustainability, emphasizing the importance of preserving the Emirate’s natural environment and leaving only memories and photographs. These talks underscore the nature-driven essence of hiking, fostering appreciation for the diverse natural landscape and the need for conservation, along with celebrating the rich culture of the Emirate.
Fadi Hachicho, Managing Director of HIGHLANDER UAE and Founder of Adventurati Outdoor, expressed excitement about hosting the 3rd edition of HIGHLANDER in Ras Al Khaimah. HIGHLANDER not only serves as an adventure sport event but also as an opportunity to showcase the majestic Hajar Mountains to a global audience of adventure lovers and hiking enthusiasts. Hachicho also announced expanded collaborations with international adventure clubs and DMCs, enhancing the travel experience for HIGHLANDER participants in 2024.
Participants can benefit from group registration discounts for HIGHLANDER Pegasus format, and those completing the full trail will receive a HIGHLANDER finisher badge and certificate, ID, Bib number, map, and access to an exclusive finish point celebration.
For those eager to take on the HIGHLANDER challenge, an exclusive 15% discount on individual registrations for both HIGHLANDER Pegasus and HIGHLANDER Orion formats is available using the code HLRAK2024. This offer is valid for one week from December 15 to December 22, 2023.
