According to Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has directed relevant ministers to establish a tourism fund to boost world-class tourism in Indonesia.

“We received direction in a meeting with President Jokowi regarding the Tourism Fund to support quality and sustainable tourism in Indonesia,” Uno stated at the Presidential Palace Complex.

He stated that the government will appoint a special panel to identify the structure for the Tourism Fund.

Several other nations that value the tourism sector, such as Singapore and Saudi Arabia, he claims, have also established tourism funds. He stated that the Tourism Fund in Indonesia will begin with solid governance and will prioritize sustainable and quality tourism by showcasing native cultural brilliance.

“Tourists visiting Indonesia will not only be measured by their quantity but also by the quality of their stay,” Uno remarked.

He noted that excellent tourism will have an economic impact on the country, such as job generation.
One alternative is to create an endowment fund financed by foreign money from tourism, which might earn $20-25 billion per year before the epidemic, he says.

“A special team will be formed to investigate this matter. We want to provide long-term funding for the Tourism Fund,” Uno said.

He emphasized that the government has studied the progress of other nations that had used tourismfund to host international-quality events.

“We will find ways to cover the Tourism Fund without a burden to our state budget. It has to be sustainable,” he affirmed.

He also stated that the government will propose a modification to Tourism Law No. 10 of 2009. The Tourism Fund’s financing will be included in the updated Tourism Law.He indicated that the entity that would oversee the Tourism Fund is still being researched.

“We already have some options, such as a fund management institution from the Finance Ministry or state-run tourism holding, InJourney,” Uno said.

He added that the tourism fund would be established in 2024, so that the new government formed as a consequence of the 2024 election may manage the money.
