Greeting 40 Tourism Ministers was a record created by UNWTO, representing majority of countries and destinations of all sizes in a summit at WTM 2023, Natalia Bayona, Executive Director, underlined the importance of investing in education.
For the 17th time, the Summit was arranged at WTM which contained inputs from the main players of the private sector and from co-organizer of WTTC.
As per UNWTO with 1.2 billion people aged between 15 to 24 globally, tourism can set itself up as the best employer for youth and motivator of youth authorization. But, according to the Office for Economic Cooperation and Development, almost 10% of that population are not employed and 14% has only elementary level education.
Outlining the way UNWTO is heading the way in terms of encouraging tourism education, Bayona, the Executive Director, highlighted the urgency to help education and skill expansion at every stage.
In October 2023, UNWTO launched its Education Toolkit. The revolutionary resource will allow the countries to introduce tourism as a high school as important subject.
In 2024, Bachelor’s Degree in Sustainable Tourism Management provided by UNWTO and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts will recruit its first students. At present, 30 universities globally provide content to the UNWTO Online Academy.
