In a landmark move, S Hotels & Resorts, the international hospitality giant, has entered a strategic alliance with the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment & Energy in the Maldives. This collaboration, themed “Empower Minds, Foster Growth,” aims to champion environmental conservation, knowledge dissemination, and support for Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) within the renowned CROSSROADS Maldives initiative.
Covering a substantial 3.15km², equivalent to 31% of CROSSROADS Maldives’ total project size, this initiative focuses on preserving the marine biodiversity of the Maldives. At the heart of the partnership is the innovative Marine Discovery Centre, a hub for environmental education and conservation projects, including coral propagation and breeding programs.
The collaboration also emphasizes education, hosting 20 students from various schools during the signing ceremony. S Hotels & Resorts commits to providing technical assistance, in-kind support, and engagement in outreach programs for public education and awareness. Michael Marshall, CEO of S Hotels & Resorts, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, reinforcing the company’s dedication to environmental protection and the sustainable development of the Maldives.
Deputy Minister Hassan Mohamed praised CROSSROADS Maldives for its conservation efforts, highlighting the crucial role of awareness and outreach in preserving the Maldives’ rich biodiversity. This partnership further solidifies S Hotels & Resorts’ position in OECMs, aligning with their commitment to being a nature-based solution organization.
The initiative coincides with COP 28’s direction to protect marine ecosystems and increase key biodiversity areas by 30% by 2030. This partnership marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and resilient future for the Maldives.
