Mallorca is experiencing a change in the travel patterns of British tourists, with more of them visiting the island outside of the traditional peak season of July and August. Maria Frontera, President of the Mallorca Hotel Federation (FEHM), announced at the World Travel Market (WTM) that the outlook for the British market in 2024 is positive. She highlighted that British visitors are increasingly choosing Mallorca in the months before and after the summer season.
A change in travel behaviour
This change in travel behaviour can be attributed to several factors. One key reason is the region’s favorable weather, which presents opportunities for outdoor activities and cultural experiences year-round. Visitors are now looking to explore Mallorca’s culture, nature, outdoor sports, gastronomy, and also the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) tourism segment.
Ability to prefer tourist preference
Mallorca’s ability to adapt to evolving tourist preferences has resulted in a trend of early hotel openings for the third consecutive year. In February 2024, 44% of hotels will be operational, increasing by 12 percentage points compared to the previous year. By March, 74% of hotels will be open, with the prediction that 90% of hotels will be operational in the second half of April and 100% by the first half of May. This extended season showcases Mallorca’s transformation into a year-round destination offering more than just sun and beach tourism.
Overtourism and it management
While discussing the future prospects for Mallorca’s tourism industry, Frontera expressed regret that the negative effects of tourism often overshadow its positive contributions. She emphasized that the uncontrolled growth of tourist rentals, rather than tourism itself, is causing problems in cities around the world. Frontera called for a balance between economic growth and sustainable tourism practices.
Hotel industry in Mallorca
Frontera also highlighted the commitment of Mallorca’s hotel sector to stable and quality employment. The industry has been successful in creating stable employment opportunities, with a growing number of hotels remaining open during the winter season. Moreover, wage increases in the hotel and catering sector have exceeded those corresponding to the rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), indicating the sector’s commitment to social welfare.
Tourism Employment and its rise
Mallorca’s tourism industry has evolved to provide year-round experiences and is committed to maintaining quality employment while balancing the needs of local residents and tourists. The destination’s ability to adapt to changing traveler preferences bodes well for its future as a sustainable and appealing tourism hotspot.
