An aircraft of Allegiant Airlines that was travelling from Indianapolis to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina was compelled to opt for an emergency landing Sunday evening after a ‘noxious smell’ had been detected inside the cabin.
Allegiant Flight 1878 had taken off from the Indianapolis Airport around 3.00 p.m. on Sunday.
It was scheduled to land at Myrtle Beach International Airport at 4.27 p.m. However, mid-flight, the attendants arrived on the intercom and informed passengers that the plane was about to make an emergency landing at the closest airport owing to a ‘noxious smell’ inside the plane’s cabin.
The plane then landed at Asheville Regional Airport where passengers were asked to deplane.
A passenger on board the flight told the local news media that she was able to smell a ‘burning, smoky smell’ close to the cabin. In a statement to the media Allegiant mentioned that the flight had to be diverted to Asheville ‘out of abundance of caution’ to check an electrical odor.
The cause of the odor is yet to be known.
As of 9.00 p.m., passengers mentioned that they had been informed that there would be an additional 25 to 30 minute delay as an issue had been detected in an air-conditioning valve in the plane to pick them up.
