UnionPay International, referred to as UPI, has recently forged a strategic alliance with Trip.com, a renowned online travel agency (OTA) worldwide. This partnership aims to elevate the payment experience for UnionPay cardholders, coinciding with the gradual resurgence of cross-border tourism.
This collaborative effort encompasses all primary transaction currencies on Trip.com’s global platforms that accept UnionPay online payments. These platforms include regions such as Hong Kong SAR, Singapore, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and other pivotal travel markets within Trip.com’s network.
Trip.com currently operates in excess of 200 countries and territories, boasting a portfolio of over 1.2 million hotels, offering travelers an extensive selection of accommodation choices. Additionally, it features a flight network with over 2 million distinct routes, connecting over 5,000 cities across the globe.
UPI caters to the world’s most extensive cardholder base, with card issuance spanning 79 countries and regions. In alignment with evolving travel preferences and requirements, UPI continues to foster seamless payment services, solidifying its connection with the global travel industry. Since the onset of 2023, UnionPay International has witnessed an impressive 81% increase in airline traffic and a remarkable 153% surge in OTA traffic. This latest collaboration expands online acceptance for over 200 million UnionPay cardholders residing beyond mainland China. Furthermore, within the Hong Kong market, local cardholders can relish heightened convenience owing to the integration of the Hong Kong version of the UnionPay App and the ability to conduct transactions in Hong Kong Dollars.
The partnership with Trip.com is poised to effectively address the payment demands of UnionPay cardholders in key markets, while also fortifying UPI’s enduring international presence in the global OTA market. This initiative underscores UPI’s commitment to expanding its global payment network and enhancing the international prominence of the UnionPay brand over the long term.
