Situated in the southern region of South Korea, Jinju City seamlessly blends history, culture, and picturesque landscapes. The city’s allure extends beyond daylight hours, as it has recently earned the designation of a ‘City Specializing in Night Tourism’ in South Korea, offering a diverse array of attractions and events for nighttime enjoyment.
Jinju Fortress and the Nam River, symbolic of Jinju’s rich history and culture, witnessed the historic Jinju Battle where 3,800 soldiers and civilians bravely thwarted a 20,000-strong Japanese invasion during the Imjin War (1592-1598). The tradition of floating lanterns on the Nam River, originally employed to impede the Japanese forces and convey messages to families, has evolved into the Jinju Namgang Yudeung (lantern) Festival, a prominent event in South Korea.
The Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival transforms the October autumn nights of Jinju into a breathtaking display, with thousands of lanterns illuminating the Nam River. This event not only pays homage to the historical significance of the lanterns used in battle but also positions Jinju as a dynamic cultural tourism destination.
Boasting over two decades of hosting the Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival and gaining global recognition as a hub for nocturnal celebrations, Jinju reached a new milestone in March 2023 by securing the title of a ‘City Specializing in Night Tourism’ in South Korea. This accolade, awarded through a competition overseen by The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization, marks a significant achievement.
Under the banner of ‘River Night Jinju: The Night of Jinju where Light and Fire Flow 365 Days,’ the city endeavors to elevate its night tourism allure by leveraging the region’s distinctiveness and unique tourism assets, with a focus on Jinju Fortress and the meandering Nam River.
Through the expansion of night tourism infrastructure, the creation of diverse nocturnal experiences, and strategic promotional efforts, Jinju City is actively crafting a distinctive night tourism brand, enhancing its appeal for visitors both day and night. The city welcomes guests with its enchanting charm, regardless of the time on the clock.
