Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has unveiled plans for the development of three exclusive boutique properties in Japan, to be named Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi. These boutique hotels are strategically positioned in the stunning Seto Inland Sea region and are slated for opening between 2027 and 2030. The construction of these resorts will involve the expertise of masterful Japanese artisans who often employ time-honored techniques, promising to set a new standard in luxury hospitality while paying homage to the region’s extraordinary traditions and history.
Few destinations worldwide can rival the unique allure of Setouchi, Japan, characterized by its breathtaking landscapes, tranquil seascapes, profound historical roots with age-old customs, and a deep connection to art, craftsmanship, culture, and fine cuisine. The primary resort is conveniently located near Takamatsu station and is just a 30-minute drive from Takamatsu airport, making it easily accessible.
Laurent Kleitman, the Group Chief Executive, expressed, “Setouchi is a distinctive part of Japan, cherished by discerning and curious global travelers. This relatively undiscovered Japanese region will captivate our patrons as they explore its various and remarkable facets, particularly as each of our three resorts embodies its own unique character, ambiance, and thoughtfully curated experiences.”
“Our elevated properties are set to enhance the region’s luxury landscape and offer an unmatched, sustainability-focused opportunity for guests – especially those passionate about art and nature – to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of this captivating part of Japan. This announcement also underscores our commitment to expanding our portfolio across the country, providing truly exceptional, experience-driven hospitality,” added Kleitman.
Takeshi Fuke, President of the development company responsible for the Takamatsu and Naoshima properties, remarked, “As seasoned developers in the hospitality and tourism sector, we are thrilled to be creating the first two components of this comprehensive resort – the boutique hotels in Takamatsu and Naoshima. We look forward to collaborating with Mandarin Oriental, renowned for their legendary hospitality. Our goal is to meticulously design these properties, seamlessly integrating them into the unique surroundings of each location and offering guests a circular journey to explore the key attractions in Shikoku and Setouchi.”
Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi at Takamatsu, is set to open in 2027. This urban resort, featuring 92 rooms, is located on the waterfront of Takamatsu, the capital of Kagawa prefecture and the gateway to Setouchi, making it the perfect starting point for guests embarking on their exploratory journey. The resort is conveniently positioned just a 30-minute drive from Takamatsu Airport, which serves domestic and international flights from major Asian hubs. Additionally, Japan’s JR rail network provides convenient train access from Takamatsu. The resort boasts panoramic water views, offering an ideal base for discovering the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding region by boat. It will also feature distinctive dining options, bars, and comprehensive spa and wellness facilities.
Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi at Naoshima, is also scheduled to open in 2027. This 22-room contemporary Japanese ryokan is situated in a picturesque fishing village, on a site that has been the residence of the Miyake clan for over 800 years. Ryokan-style guest suites and villas will be housed in a new main building and three village houses, ensuring an authentically local and culturally rich experience, complete with private terraces and gardens. Naoshima is renowned for its artistic treasures, curated by Benesse Holdings, Inc. and the Fukutake Foundation, including Monet’s “Water Lilies” series at Chichu Art Museum and Yayoi Kusama’s iconic “Pumpkin” sculptures. The island also features numerous works by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, including ANDO MUSEUM, and hosts the internationally acclaimed contemporary art festival, The Setouchi Triennale, every three years, seamlessly integrating art installations, exhibitions, and performances.
The third property, slated for opening in 2030 on a separate island, will offer 50 guest rooms with immersive wellness experiences. Additional details about this property will be announced in due course.
To enhance the overall guest experience and connect the three new properties, Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi will offer a unique cruise experience, allowing guests to travel between the sites aboard a private yacht. This innovative concept, a first for Mandarin Oriental, will immerse guests in the diverse attractions and stunning landscapes of each island, promising an unforgettable journey.
The design of Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi is deeply committed to sustainability and will pay tribute to the region’s natural beauty and rich heritage. Working closely with local artisans, the renowned Design Studio SPIN will oversee the interior design and architecture, incorporating local materials and practices into the overall aesthetic. Yamashita Sekkei and Takenaka Corporation will lead the architectural efforts, creating spaces that harmonize with their surroundings, while SOLA Associates will contribute their expertise as the Landscape Architect.
