Julia Simpson, the President & CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), expressed enthusiasm for the newly adopted International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) global framework for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). The announcement took place at the third Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3) in Dubai, where representatives from 100 states committed to achieving a 5% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030.
Simpson emphasized the significance of this agreement in aligning with ICAO’s Long Term Aspirational Goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050. Earlier this year, WTTC released a report on SAF, urging governments to take decisive action to unlock the full potential of a global SAF market. The focus was on the urgent need to increase production.
Furthermore, Simpson highlighted that addressing the challenge of sustainable aviation is not solely the responsibility of the aviation sector. Instead, it requires collaborative efforts from governments, SAF producers, investors, and all stakeholders. This collective approach aims to accelerate the development and adoption of SAF, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient aviation sector.
