China’s inaugural domestically built cruise ship, the Adora Magic City, is poised to set sail on its maiden voyage from Shanghai on January 1, offering mainland travellers an enticing blend of international exploration and home comforts. The 323.6m long vessel, operated by CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping, a joint venture between China State Shipbuilding Corp and Carnival Corp from the US, will embark on a six-day journey, stopping at South Korea’s Jeju Island, Nagasaki, and Fukuoka in Japan.

Milestone for China’s Shipbuilding Industry

Constructed by CSSC Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, the Adora Magic City stands as a symbol of China’s shipbuilding prowess, showcasing the nation’s capability to handle complex projects. With 16 decks and the capacity to accommodate 5,246 passengers in 2,125 guest rooms, the cruise liner features 22 restaurants and bars, including unique offerings such as a mahjong lounge, beer brewery, and hotpot outlet. The on-board theatres will present musicals with a distinct Chinese flavor, such as “Marco Polo: An Untold Love Story.”

A Bridge to Overseas Exploration

Considered a significant milestone, the Adora Magic City serves not only as a testament to China’s shipbuilding capabilities but also as a strategic approach to easing Chinese travelers back into international exploration. While international air travel recovery is expected to take time, domestic travel within China has rebounded robustly, with the Adora providing a unique opportunity for families to venture abroad without the concerns of traffic and lodging.

Bookings Reflect Enthusiastic Response

Bookings for the maiden voyage opened in September, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Premium cabins for two, priced at around 8,500 yuan (S$1,590) for trips in early February, during the Chinese New Year holidays, are sold out, showcasing the high demand for this novel cruise experience. Travel agency representatives note that the Adora Magic City offers a hassle-free way for families to explore different destinations while enjoying recreational activities.

Future Routes and Expansion Plans

While initially focusing on short-haul trips around Northeast Asia, the Adora Magic City has plans to add Southeast Asian routes and potentially venture into longer-haul “Maritime Belt & Road” routes, further solidifying China’s presence in the global cruise tourism market. As the vessel embarks on its inaugural journey, it signifies not only a new era for China’s cruise industry but also a bridge between the nation’s rich culture and the allure of international travel.
