With the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) panning to develop Khariya and Keriakhedi villages in the town as part of the ‘Textile Tourism’ project’s second phase, local community-run eateries, cafeterias, and homestays are set to open in Maheshwar.
The board has proposed creating “Textile Tourism” in Maheshwar to Development Commissioner Handlooms. Nearly 146 weavers live in the villages of Khariya and Keriakhedi.
The board has undertaken a project to establish places for attracting visitors and providing a platform for local artists in order to improve tourist footfall in regions rich in traditional art and craft. The board intends to build a cafeteria, traditional-style homestays, and eateries owned by the local community as part of the initiative.
Madhya Pradesh tourism principal secretary Sheo Shekhar Shukla was quoted by Times News Network as saying, “It’s an initiative to showcase the art and craft of the state to the world. These villages have a rich history of weavers and development of this region will help in attracting tourists. Tourists would be able to interact with weavers, get to see the way they work on looms and enjoy local delicacies.”
The Board intends to install signs at key intersections to direct tourists to the weavers’ villages of Khariya and Keriakhedi. It also intends to develop Uchehara in Satna and Bagh in Dhar districts. It has submitted a proposal to the Commissioner of Handicrafts Development for the development of these communities.
The Board has already begun development work on a ‘Craft Handloom Tourism Village’ at Pranpur village, Chanderi tehsil, Ashoknagar district, Madhya Pradesh. The Handlooms Development Commissioner of the Ministry of Textiles provided the Board with a grant of around Rs 7.45 crore.
