TTW Exclusive: Talks with Melusi Khumalo, Regional Marketing Manager, BSTMU- Durban Tourism

Durban, a city on the Indian Ocean in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, has been coined “The Holiday City” by locals. This is because year-round the city is open for business, with unparalleled tourist attractions to enjoy in any season.

First, visitors can explore Durban’s incredible beaches. Turn the corner and it’s an inviting white sand beach edged with palm trees and backed by a strip of vibrant bars, cafes, and restaurants. Cool winter days can be spent learning to surf or simply relaxing and sunbathing. For even more adventure, try friends and family activities like mountain biking, abseiling, and game fishing. In summer-time, the beachfront is a must-see with its colorful reggae music, beach sports and hip street vendors.

Next, Durban’s natural attractions stand strong all year round. The Durban Botanic Gardens date back to 1849 and are a rich oasis of landscaped gardens set around a sparkling lake. Kids can take a wildlife boat tour or explore the Bird Hide, the Butterfly Garden, and the palm conservatory. Nearby are ancient Hindu temples, the stunning Valley of a Thousand Hills, Moses Mabhida Stadium, Masilonyana Nature Reserve, and more. Every season demonstrates Durban’s unique topography, from the majestic Drakensberg mountain range and Lebombo mountain range to its boreal forests.

The bustling city life in Durban can be experienced all year. The historic Warwick Triangle hosts the well-known Warwick Junction complex that has been home to merchants, traders, and street merchants for centuries. It is now a vibrant hive of activity with bead craft stores and unique markets open year-round. There’s also the venerable Victoria Street Market, a former spice market dating back to the 1800s, where traders provide hot African food, fabric, clothing, and more. For a more modern retail experience, take a stroll down Florida Road with its boutiques, fine dining, art galleries, and cafes.

As many will tell, Durban is a vibrant and welcoming city that is open for business any season. From its picturesque beaches to its lively markets, every month brings its own festivals, activities, and attractions. The colourful culture, warm weather, and thriving hospitality scene make Durban an ideal destination anytime year-round.
