The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms and rain across the UK following the hottest days of the year so far. Four yellow thunderstorm warnings are in effect from 12 pm to 9 pm on Monday, covering parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, southern England, the Midlands, and most of Wales. Forecasters have cautioned that heavy downpours may lead to flash flooding, posing risks to motorists and causing disruptions to bus and rail services.

A separate yellow weather warning for rain has been issued, encompassing southern parts of England and Wales until 9 am on Monday. This comes after a weekend of scorching temperatures and heavy rainfall. On Sunday, temperatures reached 32°C at Kew Gardens in southwest London, surpassing Monaco and the French Riviera, where temperatures remained in the low 20s. Although temperatures fell just short of this year’s record high of 32.2°C, which was recorded in Chertsey, Surrey, on Saturday.

Sunday also saw substantial rainfall, with Charlwood in Surrey receiving 28.6mm of rain in the afternoon, nearly half the average for the entire month of June. Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud warned that a month’s worth of rain could potentially fall within a short period. He explained that a fine and hot start to Monday is expected, with temperatures rising quickly under strong early summer sunshine, likely triggering thundery showers. Parts of Wales and England could see 30mm of rain in an hour, with some areas experiencing 60 to 80mm of rainfall.

Citizens are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and warnings, take necessary precautions, and be mindful of possible disruptions caused by the thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
