The IFEMA MADRID is in charge of setting up fairs, congresses, and halls in its Madrid facilities. The dates of this event are set for January 24–28, 2024. The year 2024 for FITUR’s event is likely to be bigger and better. The theme for the year 2024 will be accessible and sustainable tourism. 

Promoting social, environmental, and corporate governance responsibilities in the tourism industry is something for which the fair is a global reference. At IFEMA, Ecuador made a compelling case for itself as a “FITUR 2024 Partner Country.” With about 75,000 tourists annually expected by 2023, the relationship between Ecuador and Spain is still strong. According to Niels Olsen, Ecuador’s Minister of Tourism, FITUR 2024 will offer a golden opportunity to show the world all the wonders that Ecuador has to offer.

Worldwide business event customers, sellers, and media flock together at the Asia Pacific Incentives and Meetings Event (AIME), a trade show. The megaevent AIME is scheduled for 2024 on February 19–21, 2024, at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre.

More than 500 exhibitors are projected to participate, which led to a rise of more than 40% over AIME 2023.

With over 160 foreign buyers travelling to Melbourne in February for AIME 2024—a 51% increase over AIME 2023—more than 600 hosted buyers are expected to attend.  

Twenty-seven nations will be present at AIME 2024. Convention bureaus, hotels and resorts, convention centres,  production, unique venues, audiovisual companies, destination management companies (DMCs), airlines, cruise lines, suppliers from all states in Australia, and international destinations such as New Zealand, Japan, Africa, Fiji, Macau, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Korea, Singapore, USA, Canada, Germany, Italy, Malta, Norway, Spain, UK, Vietnam, and more are among the exhibitors.

The remarkable expansion provides further evidence of AIME’s enduring history, its significance to the business events sector, and the APAC region’s relevance to the worldwide events industry. 

New zones, such as The Boutique and DMC Network, can be integrated into the expanded show floor, and some exhibitors who have never displayed at AIME can make their debut. Designed as a special area for the world’s boutique experience providers, The Boutique will feature operators like boutique wineries that are independently owned and have tiny, cozy spaces, luxury venues with a focus on design and unique services, and other experiences that are highly customizable and customized.

Additionally, there will be a special area at AIME reserved for Destination Management Companies (DMCs) called the DMC Network. Teams operating on the ground throughout the globe will come together in this area, and they will be in a prime position to curate experiences specifically suited for conferences, incentives, and events in their locality.

AIME will be instrumental in providing spaces on the show floor, which will feature meetings that will be devised on the spot. Alongside this, it will be effective in facilitating more opportunities relating to networking across the three days concerning the event.

FITUR, in collaboration with IMPULSA IGUALDAD, is pleased to announce the inaugural edition of the FITUR 4all 2024 Awards, designed to acknowledge the commendable efforts of destinations, companies, and institutions in advancing accessibility within the tourism industry. The awards aim to spotlight, appreciate, and inspire commitment towards inclusive tourism.

The FITUR 4all Awards will be distributed across four categories: National Destination, International Destination, Inclusive Tourism Company, and Inclusive Organisation or Institution. Participants, including exhibitors, co-exhibitors, or collaborating entities of FITUR 2024, are invited to submit their applications by January 10, 2024, utilizing the provided form and accompanying documentary evidence. A panel of experts in tourism, accessibility, and inclusion will assess the submissions.

The Inclusive National Destination and Inclusive International Destination categories will recognize destinations that excel in the development of accessible tourism within their regions, emphasizing innovation in project design and implementation, the potential to enhance inclusion and accessibility, positive impacts on the tourism sector, and the sustainability of proposals.

In the Inclusive Tourism Company category, recognition will be bestowed upon the organization that has exhibited outstanding achievements in developing products or services that enhance accessibility, positively impacting the inclusion of individuals with accessibility needs in tourism activities. Finally, the Inclusive Organisation or Institution category will honor entities that have successfully championed initiatives fostering collaboration, awareness, and implementation of inclusive policies. The scope and impact of these initiatives will be evaluated, along with the organization’s ability to promote, exemplify, and educate on inclusion within the industry and public sphere.

Winners will be presented with a diploma and trophy during the FITUR 4all Awards ceremony at FITUR 2024 at IFEMA MADRID. Additionally, they will receive a seal for use in both physical and digital media.

On the occasion of FITUR 2024, the International Tourism Trade Fair organised by IFEMA MADRID from 24 to 28 January and whose 44th edition has Ecuador as a partner country, its Minister of Tourism, Niels Olsen highlights in an interview the fundamental contribution of tourism to Ecuador’s economy, being the third most important non-oil industry in terms of revenue generation.

Thus, in the first half of 2023, the tourism sector generated close to USD 1 billion in foreign exchange, marking a growth of 25.7% compared to 2022, and a turnover of tourism activities in excess of USD 4.2 billion from January to September. UNWTO forecasted that Ecuador will recover its 2019 international tourist numbers in 2023, rather than 2024, thanks to its competitiveness and promotional activities.

Ecuador, FITUR 2024 Partner Country with a stand focused on gastronomy

In this context of competitiveness and promotion, Ecuador is a Partner Country of FITUR 2024 and, in the words of its Minister of Tourism, “it represents a crucial strategic step towards achieving its ambitious tourism objectives. By hosting this prestigious event, Ecuador not only seeks to achieve its goal of two million international tourists by 2025, an increase of 25% compared to 2019, but also to generate employment opportunities with the expectation that the tourism sector will employ 700,000 people by that date”.

In his interview for FITUR, Niels Olsen said that “the stand at FITUR will be a historic milestone for the country and, moreover, one of the largest and most participative at the fair, with the presence of 48 private companies, reflecting the dynamism and diversity of the country’s tourism offer, and with authorities from various municipalities promoting their destinations and offering a comprehensive vision of Ecuador’s many facets of tourism”.

Inviting visitors to visit the stand in Hall 3, Olsen highlighted the food demos and tasting events that will bring professionals and visitors closer to the richness of Ecuador.

Ecuador, at the forefront of Sustainable and Violet Tourism

In his commitment to the diversification of Ecuador’s tourism sector, the Minister of Tourism stressed the importance of promoting sustainable and responsible tourism for its “positive impact on the lives of local communities and residents and its contribution to the conservation and regeneration of their natural and cultural heritage while creating unforgettable and enriching experiences for visitors”.

“Ecuador is pioneering a programme that seeks to identify the needs of women in tourism in their role as entrepreneurs, collaborators and visitors. Violet Tourism caters to a niche market focused on women,” said Niels Olsen, Ecuador’s Minister of Tourism. “We also seek to revalue authenticity in new, emerging destinations to attract national and international tourists through Pueblos y Rincones Mágicos (the Magical Towns Programme) and Best Tourism Villages of Ecuador”.

Niels Olsen, in his interview for FITUR, highlighted the diversity of Ecuador’s tourism offer. “It is a country that offers unique experiences, from the beaches and Afro-Ecuadorian culture of the coast, to the Andean peaks and indigenous history in the highlands, the rich biodiversity of the Amazon or the unique wildlife of the Galapagos.

Ecuador’s tourism sector, a universal attraction and engine of economic growth

The country is strongly committed to boosting the growth of the tourism sector and, in order to increase its competitiveness, it has implemented measures such as tax and tariff reductions and the signing of Open Skies agreements with the United States, which has improved its air connectivity and the recovery of its international routes. As a result, from January to November 2023, Ecuador’s main source market was the USA, with more than 396,000 visitors, followed by Colombia, with 224,000, and Peru, with more than 110,000.

In fourth place is Spain, which has reached 100,000 in this period. “In recent years, the flow of tourists and connectivity between Spain and Ecuador has undergone a remarkable evolution,” Olsen explains. “In 2022 it received 58% more Spanish visitors compared to 2021, which was a 95% recovery from pre-pandemic figures. In terms of air connectivity, the Ecuador-Madrid-Ecuador route in 2022 had 46.04% more passengers than in 2021 with a demand for 73.59% of the seats offered,” he continues.

Finally, Olsen highlighted the important role of tourism for the national economy, and he placed it as one of the most important sectors for the generation of employment, as it supports more than half a million families throughout the country. Moreover, not only does it generate direct employment, but at least 52 other activities benefit from this industry, such as gastronomy, the artisan craft trade, the conservation of natural areas or the preservation of cultural heritage. “This translates into a multiplier effect that benefits local communities, promotes entrepreneurship and fosters the development of infrastructures in various regions,” concluded the Ecuadorian Minister of Tourism.

FITUR Sports 2024 will focus on three main areas: Outdoor Sports, Competitions and Events & Sports Business Travel.

The FITUR section dedicated to sports tourism is expanding for this second edition, having announced that there will be three days for professionals led by the main players in the tourism and sports industry.

 The stand space will feature a paddle tennis court and an agenda of activities during the weekend.

FITUR Sports 2024 is the section dedicated to sports tourism at FITUR 2024, the International Tourism Trade Fair to be held from 24 to 28 January organised by IFEMA MADRID. The section has announced that its programme will focus on three main content themes: Outdoor Sports, Competitive Sports and Sports Events & Sports Business Travel.

FITUR Sports will grow significantly in its second edition, in line with the importance of sports tourism in Spain and the world. It’s set to become one of the most important events of the year, as the main players, organisations and professionals who make up the tourism and sports industry have shown keen interest in it.

To meet this growth, it has extended its calendar, adding three professional days (24-26 January). It will also feature a programme of talks and round tables led by the best experts in tourism and sport, who will address the pressing issues and latest trends in the industry, creating spaces for knowledge-sharing and for generating business opportunities. Meanwhile, professionals will have the chance to interact in the networking area, with exhibitors’ tables and work meetings.
