Earthquake with 67 magnitude kill 1 in southern Philippines

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 struck north-central Japan on Monday, triggering a tsunami warning along coastal regions of Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama prefectures. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the warning, cautioning residents about the potential danger of tsunami waves.

The earthquake’s epicenter and its significant magnitude raised concerns about the possibility of a destructive tsunami. The Japan Meteorological Agency specifically highlighted the coastal areas of Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama prefectures, urging residents to evacuate to higher ground and take immediate safety measures.

The tsunami warning included an alarming projection of waves up to 5 meters high potentially reaching Noto in Ishikawa Prefecture. The agency advised residents to remain vigilant and adhere to evacuation orders promptly. Initial reports indicated that waves exceeding 1 meter in height had already struck the coast of Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture.

In response to the seismic activity, Hokuriku Electric Power initiated checks for any irregularities at its nuclear power plants, underlining the importance of safety protocols during such events. The earthquake’s impact and the ensuing tsunami warning prompted heightened emergency preparedness across the affected regions.

The seismic event occurred in a seismically active region, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation for potential aftershocks and further developments. The earthquake serves as a reminder of Japan’s vulnerability to seismic activity and the importance of swift and coordinated responses to mitigate the impact on communities.

Japan, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. The country has implemented robust earthquake preparedness and early warning systems to minimize the potential impact of seismic events. The tsunami warning system is a critical component of these efforts, providing valuable time for residents to seek safety.

As the situation unfolds, authorities will continue to assess the seismic activity, monitor the coastline for tsunami waves, and coordinate evacuation efforts to ensure the safety of residents in the affected regions. The earthquake serves as a sobering reminder of the ongoing seismic risks faced by Japan and the need for constant vigilance and preparedness.

Kurli Island, Japan, Earthquake

The Kuril Islands of Japan were subjected to an earthquake on 27th December with a Richter scale magnitude of 6.3, as has been reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

The Kuril Island in Japan, also known as a haven for hundreds of different bird species, is a group of islands in the Russian Far East.

The island has a population of about 20,000 people, and this earthquake shook them off.

There happens to exist numerous active volcanoes, such as Golovnin Volcano, which features a crater with two lakes, may also be found on the islands. However, Kurli Island may appear serene on the surface, but when earthquakes happen in this state, then it is not so serene.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 10 km at 2:45 pm (IST), as has been reported by the NCS. The epicentre of the earthquake happened to be located at latitude 44.36 and longitude 149.23, according to the NCS.

However, two earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.5 and 5.0 struck close to Japan’s coast in short succession, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), as they went on and told the media. In the Russian Far East, Sakhalin Oblast is in charge of administering the Kuril Islands.

According to the USGS, two earthquakes occurred at 2:45 PM and 3:07 PM. The first, measuring magnitude 6.5, had its epicentre off the southeast coast of the Kuril Islands. The second, measuring magnitude 5.0, jolted the region.

The two earthquakes struck at a depth of 23.8 km, while the second one happened at 40 km in the same area, according to the USGS.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Taiwan was earlier on December 24 rocked by an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3.

It reported that the epicentre of the earthquake was located at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles).

Japan Airlines Co., Ltd., under the leadership of President and Group CEO Yuji Akasaka, has reached a significant milestone by becoming Japan’s pioneer airline to register as a TNFD Adopter, aligning with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). This move showcases the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

In the timeline of achievements, Japan Airlines participated in the TNFD Forum in March 2023 and subsequently, in August 2023, emerged as the first Japanese airline to proactively disclose information in accordance with TNFD recommendations. Looking ahead, JAL pledges to further fortify its disclosure practices based on the finalized recommendations released in September of that year. The airline aims to amplify its efforts in attaining Nature Positive, collaborating with fellow early adopters to expedite the realization of this initiative.

The company’s proactive stance is evident in its participation in various conservation activities. JAL Group has been actively engaged in safeguarding species by combatting illegal wildlife trade, ensuring ecosystem preservation through stringent plant quarantine measures, and preserving natural resources in World Natural Heritage sites. These endeavors underscore JAL’s unwavering commitment to bequeathing a thriving Earth to future generations.

JAL is resolute in intensifying its ongoing endeavors to achieve Nature Positive. The company aspires to actively contribute to creating a society where the synergy between nature and humanity is harmonious through its operational activities.

Iberia is set to recommence its direct flights between Madrid and Tokyo Narita International Airport starting on October 27, 2024, coinciding with the commencement of the upcoming winter season. The Spanish airline will operate three weekly flights from Madrid on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, while flights from Tokyo will depart on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays throughout the year.

This direct flight between Madrid and Tokyo stands as the sole nonstop connection bridging Spain and Japan.

A total of over 45,000 seats will be available for sale between Spain and Japan during the forthcoming winter season, spanning from October 27th to March 25th.

Due to the closure of Russian airspace, adjustments have been made to the flight path to Tokyo. Customers flying round-trip with Iberia will experience a round-the-world journey, departing from Madrid to Tokyo via the southern route and returning across the northern path, traversing Russia, the Pacific Ocean, and the Arctic, taking into account crucial wind dynamics in route planning.

Seats for these flights are now available for purchase on Iberia.com, with prices starting at €931 for a round-trip ticket.

Iberia has chosen the Airbus A350 aircraft, known for its modernity, efficiency, and reduced noise levels, to operate this new direct flight. With its innovative Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines and latest-generation materials, the A350 consumes 30 to 35% less fuel compared to similar planes, leading to lower CO2 emissions. Madrid, serving as a gateway from Asia to Spain, Europe, and Latin America, gains significance with this direct flight to Tokyo. This marks Iberia’s return to Japan and Asia, reestablishing its presence after the last direct flight operated in 2020 due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

María Jesús López Solás, Iberia’s Commercial and Network Development and Alliances Director, expressed, “Our return to Tokyo signifies a significant milestone for Iberia. It reflects our commitment to Japan, where our operations began in 1986. This, coupled with our recent launch of direct flights to Doha, underscores our dedication to Asia. At Iberia, we aim to showcase Madrid’s potential as a gateway connecting Spain, Europe, and Latin America to this thriving continent.”

Iberia also offers the Stopover Hola Madrid program for passengers flying from Tokyo to other destinations, allowing a stay of up to six nights in the Spanish capital without additional flight costs. This program provides various discounts and benefits at hotels, restaurants, and leisure activities, attracting around 20,000 passengers annually.
